Today, we’re talking about the terms for magic and magician. The hardest part about this particular video was trying to manage all these languages in one run. I mostly did okay on it.
We’ll start with the Proto-Indo-European root for magic, *magh-, whose reconstructed meaning seems to be “to be able” or “to have power.” We’ll then move straight to Persia, which is clearly where most everyone else west of them imports a primary word for magic from, eventually. We’ll also go east and talk about words in Sanskrit, which lets us talk a little bit about the word smará, which I found super fascinating.
The transcript is, of course, attached here. I hope that you enjoy this little series.
I’m likely to eventually string these all together as a longer video, or recut them to go on the ADF pages somewhere, or in some form. I know already that I’ve got a request to use them. I want to see where I can get with them first, and figure out how many I end up doing.
I’m super excited, though, about finding a way to tackle the practical questions in Magic for Priests. I have ideas, but I’m super excited about what might happen next with those.
