pieced together by: MJD
People seek to open to the gods in various, strange ways. After looking at some oracles in the ancient world, I pieced this one together from their examples. It seems to follow the same theory, except it uses quotes from Jimmy Buffett songs instead of the Illiad or the Bible. All lyrics come from margaritaville.com, and I’ve only altered them to try and fix some punctuation and a bit of spelling, or maybe to reflect what Jimmy is actually singing.
The most interesting part of this exercise was realizing how much the internalization of the text in question affects the reading. My internalization of the Jimmy Buffett lyrics adds amazing layers of interpretation to this that I would have never expected. I’ll talk about that in a separate article.
The source oracles are also available, drawn from the Homeric Oracle in the Greek Magical Papyri and a collection of Christian oracles from several centuries later.
The verse will be picked randomly each time you refresh this screen. This one might match up better with specific questioning (“Should I dump my boyfriend?” types of questions) than the Homeric or Christian oracles did, but I think it should still be used to guide your day, rather than answer specific problems.
Today’s verse, specific to you, is:
93. There’s a lot I want to pass along that was handed down to me.
So says the Jimmy Buffett Oracle. May it help you!
