Upcoming Virtual Events: Healing and Magic, #TheFlameOfHope

On Friday next week (January 29, 2021), I’ll be presenting in a short workshopwith a couple of other really neat people. The event is called “Living Well, Dying Well: Magic and Healing Workshop,” and I’ll be discussing relationships and inspiration as they relate to healing.

I don’t always get to talk about the woowoo stuff of magic in an academic setting, so I’m a little excited to do so. I’m also looking forward to hearing what other folks will have to say about their experiences as well. The lineup for this two-hour discussion is:

  • Michael Swartz is moderating

  • Hugh Urban is speaking about folk magic and medicine and how the internet has transformed it

  • Alexander Rocklin will discuss “Hindu magic” (obeah) in Caribbean practice, and the solidarity it creates

  • Sabina Magliocco will chat about Italian Healing Modalities: Story and Song” about folk healing traditions

  • And I’ll talk about “Healing through Inspiration and Relationships”

I’m really excited to do this presentation. And, it’ll be live-captioned! Which is awesome!

Also, tomorrow (January 20, 2021) at noon, I’ll be lighting the final promised candle of #TheFlameOfHope in a livestream on Facebook.

Preparing for that final candle is bittersweet and full of complicated emotions: this work has consumed four years of my life, and it’s been full of close calls and strange events. Often, candles don’t seem like nearly enough (because they aren’t), and learning how to square that with the action has been both a strange and fruitful endeavor. Certainly, I’ve grown and learned a lot from it.

What happens next, when the promised candles are all kindled? I’m still working on that. There is certainly more work to do, and more hope needed in this world. But I’ll have some answers for you all tomorrow.

Now, back to work 😉
