Weed Appreciation Day Prayer – 3/28/2023

Rev. Dangler surrounded by trees in spring

Yes, I checked to see what kind of “weed” was being appreciated, though for those who know me, I’m really likely to speak in praise of weeds in general, even if this holiday were about a rather specific “weed.”

I worked fairly hard on this prayer, and while it was shorter than I think I wanted it to be originally, it turned out to be one of my favorites that I’ve written. It’s hard to find a weed you can record with this time of year in Ohio, but I found a space that was muddy and grassy, and covered in the meadow growth behind my house to record in.

Something about weeds always gets to me; I respect their tenacious grip on nourishing soil, their ability to look good when they’re entirely out of place, and their carefree attitude about who wants them to be where they are. A weed, after all, is just something that grows outside the bounds of what is wanted, and we are all there sometimes.

So, today I’m praising the weeds, and reflecting on what they bring to our lives. That weedy goodness of deep roots and sun-seeking really got to me in my moment of prayer here, and I hope you find it fitting and heartwarming, too.
