{"id":1840,"date":"2023-03-18T01:51:38","date_gmt":"2023-03-18T01:51:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/67.225.164.17\/~chronarchy\/?p=1840"},"modified":"2023-03-18T01:51:38","modified_gmt":"2023-03-18T01:51:38","slug":"the-marriage-of-lugus-and-rosmerta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/67.225.164.17\/~chronarchy\/the-marriage-of-lugus-and-rosmerta\/","title":{"rendered":"The Marriage of Lugus and Rosmerta"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><\/p>\n<h1>The Marriage of Lugus and Rosmerta<\/h1>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<pre>In ancient days when the world was young\r\nthe land herself sought out her king. \r\nShe called out to the tribes to send \r\nforth all their best and noblest.\r\n\r\nIn bouts of skill and strength and word \r\ndid each compete and each excel, \r\nbut in the end one man arose \r\nand stood apart from all the rest.\r\n\r\nHis eyes shone clear, his shoulders broad, \r\nbut gentle was his temprament. \r\nOf kingly bearing he was made; \r\nthere was no question here of that.\r\n\r\nHis name was Lugus, Giant's Bane, \r\nhis strength and honor unsurpassed; \r\nhe knew the many arts of man \r\nand worked them all with skillful hand.\r\n\r\nThe land, Rosmerta, called him near \r\nand held aloft a cup of mead. \r\n\"This cup,\" she said, \"is all my love, \r\nand in it find your sovereignty.\"\r\n\r\nHis hands reached forth and grasped the cup; \r\nRosmerta, though, did not let go \r\nand held the cup firm in her hands: \r\n\"There is one thing before you drink.\"\r\n\r\n\"The people first approve their king, \r\nby their consent his rule is whole, \r\nfor he serves them for all his days, \r\nand should he fail, they'll have his head.\"\r\n\r\nAnd to the people she called out, \r\n\"The land rejects an unjust king: \r\nWill you hold to this mighty oath?\" \r\nAnd how do th'folk respond to her?\r\n  (the folk: \"We do!\")\r\n\r\nAnd to the people she called out, \r\n\"And if your king should be unjust, \r\nthen do you swear to throw him out?\" \r\nAnd how do th'folk respond to her?\r\n  (the folk: \"We do!\")\r\n\r\nAnd to the people she called out, \r\n\"Do you, dear people, love the land, \r\nand do you hold my honor bright?\" \r\nAnd how do th'folk respond to her?\r\n  (the folk: \"We do!\")\r\n\r\nRosmerta now released the cup \r\nand Lugus drank the mead so sweet. \r\nThe Land had found her champion, \r\nand the people had found a king.\r\n\r\nHail to Lugus, the rightful king! \r\nHail to Rosmerta who chose him! \r\nHail to the folk who give him leave, \r\nand ever have power o're him!<\/pre>\n<p><i>-June 2007<\/i><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span><i>Written for the Three Cranes Grove, ADF, 2007 Summer Solstice ritual, this poem was written more as the script for a play than anything else. While the poem was recited, actors portrayed the parts of Lugus and Rosmerta (and a few warriors). It was designed mostly to simply tell the story (as best as can be reconstructed).
