The event is called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/religion.osu.edu\/events\/living-well-dying-well-religion-health-and-healing-series-magic-and-healing-workshop\" target=\"_blank\">Living Well, Dying Well: Magic and Healing Workshop<\/a>,&#8221; and I&#8217;ll be discussing relationships and inspiration as they relate to healing.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t always get to talk about the <em>woowoo <\/em>stuff of magic in an academic setting, so I&#8217;m a little excited to do so. I&#8217;m also looking forward to hearing what other folks will have to say about their experiences as well. The lineup for this two-hour discussion is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Michael Swartz is moderating<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Hugh Urban is speaking about folk magic and medicine and how the internet has transformed it<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Alexander Rocklin will discuss &#8220;Hindu magic&#8221; (<em>obeah<\/em>) in Caribbean practice, and the solidarity it creates<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Sabina Magliocco will chat about Italian Healing Modalities: Story and Song&#8221; about folk healing traditions<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>And I&#8217;ll talk about &#8220;Healing through Inspiration and Relationships&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;m really excited to do this presentation. And, it&#8217;ll be live-captioned! Which is awesome!<\/p>\n<p>Also, tomorrow (January 20, 2021) at noon, I&#8217;ll be lighting the final promised candle of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TendingTheFlameOfHope\" target=\"_blank\">#TheFlameOfHope<\/a> in a <a href=\"https:\/\/fb.me\/e\/14mpaxHuG\" target=\"_blank\">livestream on Facebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Preparing for that final candle is bittersweet and full of complicated emotions: this work has consumed four years of my life, and it&#8217;s been full of close calls and strange events. Often, candles don&#8217;t seem like nearly enough (because they aren&#8217;t), and learning how to square that with the action has been both a strange and fruitful endeavor. Certainly, I&#8217;ve grown and learned a lot from it.<\/p>\n<p>What happens next, when the promised candles are all kindled? I&#8217;m still working on that. There is certainly more work to do, and more hope needed in this world.
