Cows, like gold,\r\nFlow from the king;\r\nGenerous with wealth,\r\nAvoiding the wolf.\r\n\r\nAurochs show strength,\r\nDrive out the dross.\r\nThe cosmic cow\r\nBrings the rains.\r\n\r\nThorns are sharp,\r\nPainful to sit upon.\r\nGiants bring illness,\r\nBad luck to women.\r\n\r\nMouth begins language,\r\nA wise start for all.\r\nThe All-Father comes\r\nFrom the opening-place.\r\n\r\nRiding upon a horse,\r\nWho carries you forth.\r\nWorse for him than you,\r\nBut speedy for both.\r\n\r\nTorch blazes in the hall\r\nWhere folk find rest;\r\nIt burns to the touch,\r\nAnd dangerous for children.\r\n\r\nGifts are the responsibility\r\nof those who have much.\r\nGenerous folk are loved\r\nand known by all.\r\n\r\nJoy comes from freedom,\r\nWhich lightens the load.\r\nThe gift of the unknown:\r\nNot knowing brings bliss.\r\n\r\nHail is coldest of grains,\r\nAnd death of serpents.\r\nIt beats the earth,\r\nAnd melts into water.\r\n\r\nNeed gives no choice,\r\nHard work is its cure.\r\nChildren who learn from it\r\nWill grow wise as they age.\r\n\r\nIce is beautiful,\r\nA sight to behold;\r\nIt is the roof of rivers,\r\nAnd a danger to cross.\r\n\r\nYear is the patience,\r\nThe harvest we reap\r\nAt the end of our toils.\r\nA blessing on the folk.\r\n\r\nYew, greenest of trees:\r\nUpheld by deep roots\r\nYou guard the fire\r\nAnd the bow bends in you.\r\n\r\nDice-cup is the piece\r\nBringing laughter to all:\r\nThe luck of the roll\r\nShows them their fate.\r\n\r\nElk-sedge, sharp-tongued:\r\nProtected by blades,\r\nGrowing in waters\r\nAt the edge of the land.\r\n\r\nSun, the highest hope,\r\nThat lights the land;\r\nVictory over the ice.\r\nShining ray, sky shield.\r\n\r\nTir is the north star,\r\nGuiding the folk aright.\r\nTruth and justice shine\r\nWhere his hand is placed.\r\n\r\nBirch is the fertile one\r\nWho grows when cut.\r\nBranches reach skyward,\r\nA strong crown of leaves.\r\n\r\nHorses, joy of princes,\r\nGive rest to the folk.\r\nPrideful, beautiful,\r\nSacred to the gods.\r\n\r\nMan is joy to his fellow,\r\nBut one day he may fail.\r\nRejoice now in each other,\r\nFor the future is unknown.\r\n\r\nWater wells up from below,\r\nFlows from the mountain,\r\nShines with bright gold;\r\nSeek treasures within.\r\n\r\nIng came from the east,\r\nHero and king to all.\r\nOver the sea he traveled,\r\nThe world comes into bloom.\r\n\r\nDay is given unto us,\r\nRich and poor alike:\r\nFilled with mirth and song,\r\nA boon to the pious.\r\n\r\nInheritance holds fast;\r\nThe ancestors bring forth\r\nWealth that never dies.\r\nJoy and peace to the folk.<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
